It's a little frustrating, because it seems like most people use the app to update without any drama whatsoever. I even tried restoring the camera settings to default (Turning it on while holding the shutter button) and trying both the app and manual methods again. Nothing different happens, the camera starts up normally, and seemingly ignores the update. Then I'm supposed to insert the SD card, and turn on the camera, and the update should automatically start. So, giving up on the app, I tried to manually update by downloading the files from GoPro's site, and unzipping them onto the SD card. (This is on the screen where you can directly control/view the feed from the camera) What's weird though, is if I "Connect and Control" my camera with the app, it does get correctly identified as a hero 3+ black. It seems like the phone app doesn't know what kind of update to download, because it can't figure out what kind of camera I have. My camera model appears as "GPCAMERA_MODEL_ID[(nu." If I go to App Settings -> Camera Models, the phone app has a list of cameras that it checks updates for. No idea why this happens, but I may have a clue. If I try to do it over wifi, the update button just never appears in the app (IOS 8, if that matters) So this is the first time I'm (trying) updating my GoPro, and it just won't happen.
